How to Defend Better in FC 27

FC 27 changes the way players need to approach both defending and attacking. One of the biggest gameplay adjustments is the reduced influence of AI-controlled defenders in Competitive gameplay. Instead of relying on teammates to automatically win the ball, players have more responsibility for switching defenders, jockeying, positioning, and choosing the right moment to tackle.

At the same time, attacking movement has been improved, giving players more ways to create space through controlled runs, passing combinations, and wider attacking positions. Learning how these systems work is more important than simply copying a popular formation.

Defend With Positioning Before Tackling

The most important defensive adjustment in FC 27 is learning to delay the tackle.

AI-controlled defenders now play more of a supporting role and are less likely to automatically challenge the ball carrier. EA has also increased the jockey speed of manually controlled defenders and expanded the range of manually triggered standing tackles.

This makes jockeying particularly important when defending around the edge of the box. Instead of immediately switching to the nearest defender and rushing toward the attacker, control the defender who can block the most dangerous passing or shooting lane.

Your first objective should be to remove the attacker’s next option. If the opponent is moving toward the center, protect the inside channel first. If the ball is already in a wide position, avoid pulling your central defender too far away from the box.

This approach gives you more time to react when the opponent changes direction.

Do Not Overuse Teammate Contain

Teammate Contain is still useful, but FC 27 makes it less effective as a substitute for manual defending. AI teammates now maintain a slightly greater distance from the ball carrier when using the feature.

That means Teammate Contain works better as a way to limit space while you control the primary defender.

A simple defensive sequence is to use the supporting defender to restrict one passing lane while you manually control another player. Once the attacker commits to a direction, switch quickly and close the remaining space yourself.

This is safer than constantly controlling the defender closest to the ball.

Build Attacks Around Manual Runs

FC 27 also gives players more control over attacking movement. Manually triggered overlapping and underlapping runs can create additional passing options, while improved creative runs are designed to produce more intelligent movement away from the ball.

The key is not to trigger runs constantly.

If several attackers all move forward at the same time, the team can lose its passing structure. Instead, use one run to move a defender and keep another attacker available underneath.

For example, a winger can attack the space behind the full-back while the midfielder stays available for a short pass. If the defender follows the run, the midfielder receives more space. If the defender stays central, the winger becomes the forward passing option.

This creates a simple two-option attack without forcing a difficult pass.

Use Width Before Forcing Through Balls

FC 27’s attacking changes also make spacing important. Rather than repeatedly attempting through balls through a crowded central area, move the opponent’s defensive shape first.

Passing toward a wide player can force the defense to shift. Once the defensive line moves, the central passing lane may open for a midfielder or striker.

This is especially useful against opponents who manually defend the middle of the pitch. Instead of trying to beat the same defender repeatedly, move the ball from one side to the other and wait for the defensive structure to change.

The goal is to create an opening before attempting the final pass.

Manage Your Squad Resources Around Your Tactics

Tactical improvements do not always require replacing half of the squad. Before spending FC 27 Coins on a new player, identify whether the problem comes from the player’s attributes or from how the team is being used.

For example, a midfielder may appear ineffective because he is constantly being pulled out of position rather than because his overall rating is too low. Likewise, a fast winger may not improve the attack if there is no space for him to run into.

Fixing the tactical problem first can make the existing squad more effective and leave resources available for upgrades that genuinely change how the team plays.

Make Crosses Part of Your Attack

Crossing and corner kicks have also received changes in FC 27, with EA aiming to provide more attacking variety in these situations. The gameplay update includes improvements to crossing, free movement and positioning, shielding, finishing variety, and headers.

That does not mean every attack should end with a cross.

The better approach is to use width to create different attacking possibilities. When a winger reaches the final third, the defender has to decide whether to close the ball or protect the space inside. That decision can create room for either a cross or a pass back toward the edge of the box.

Players should therefore avoid treating crossing as a last-second option. It can be used earlier in the attack to change the opponent’s defensive positioning.

Keep Midfield Support Behind the Attack

One of the easiest ways to lose control of a match is sending too many players forward.

When both full-backs, midfielders, and attacking players move ahead of the ball, losing possession can immediately expose the center of the pitch. Keeping at least one midfielder in a supporting position gives you an extra passing option during possession and a player who can help slow down counterattacks.

This is particularly important in FC 27 because manual defending has a larger role. A good defensive structure gives you more time to switch to the correct defender instead of forcing your center-backs to defend large spaces.

Adjust Your Tactics During the Match

There is no reason to use exactly the same attacking approach for the entire match.

If your opponent is defending aggressively, quick passes and wider positioning can help move their defensive players away from the ball. If they are sitting deep, patient circulation becomes more useful because rushing forward simply creates more defenders in front of the ball.

The same principle applies defensively. If the opponent repeatedly attacks through the wings, protect the wide areas without dragging your central defenders out of position. If they rely on central combinations, keep your midfield structure compact and make them play around you.

The best tactical adjustment is often a small change rather than completely switching formations.

Practice Manual Defending First

The biggest FC 27 tactical lesson is that defensive control matters more than simply choosing a popular formation.

Because EA has reduced the influence of automatic AI defending while improving manual jockeying and tackling, players who learn to switch defenders, control space, delay attacks, and choose their tackle timing have more tools available to them.

The same approach should be used when managing FIFA 27 Coins. Rather than spending resources on every highly rated player that appears on the market, consider whether an upgrade actually fits the way you attack and defend. A player with useful attributes for your tactical setup can provide more practical value than a higher-rated card that does not suit your style.

For attacking, build around spacing, controlled runs, passing angles, and patient movement. FC 27 rewards players who actively control the important moments of a match. A balanced setup can provide a starting point, but understanding when to defend manually, when to trigger a run, and when to slow the game down will have a much larger impact on your results.
